The book of Isaiah is often called the “Gospel of the Old Testament.” Written more than 700 years before the birth of Jesus, Isaiah’s words shine a prophetic light on the coming Messiah. His writings are some of the clearest and most powerful pictures of who Jesus would be.
So, what does Isaiah really say about Jesus? Let’s take a closer look.
1. Prophecy of the Virgin Birth
Verse: Isaiah 7:14
Prophecy: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Fulfillment: This points to the miraculous birth of Jesus through Mary. The name Immanuel means “God with us,” showing that Jesus is divinely sent.
2. The Suffering Servant
Verse: Isaiah 53
Prophecy: Isaiah describes a servant who would be rejected, pierced, and crushed for our sins.
Fulfillment: Christians see this as a prophecy of Jesus’ crucifixion. “By his wounds we are healed” is a promise of forgiveness and redemption through Christ.
3. The Prince of Peace
Verse: Isaiah 9:6
Prophecy: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given… and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Fulfillment: This passage points to Jesus’ divine authority and His role as the one who brings peace to the world.
4. A Light to the Nations
Verse: Isaiah 49:6
Prophecy: The Messiah would be a light for the Gentiles, bringing salvation to the ends of the earth.
Fulfillment: Jesus did not come only for Israel but for all nations, offering hope and salvation to everyone.
